Boots & workwear that actually fit. You've got this.

"Shrink it and pink it" isn't fit. Boots that slip at the heel and pants cut for someone else's hips are a safety problem, not just a comfort one. Here's how to find gear made for your body — and the brands building it.

Fit first

How to get a work boot that fits

Measure at the end of the day

Feet swell over a shift. Measure length and width in the afternoon, standing, wearing your work socks.

Women's last, not just a smaller size

Many women find men's boots slip at the heel and pinch at the instep. Boots built on a women's last are shaped for a narrower heel relative to the forefoot.

Converting from men's sizes

A common rule of thumb: women's size ≈ men's size + 1.5 (so men's 7 ≈ women's 8.5). Always check the brand's own size chart — they differ.

Toe room with a safety toe

A steel, alloy or composite toe cap doesn't stretch. You should be able to wiggle your toes freely and your toes shouldn't touch the cap when you crouch.

Heel lock

Walk, climb a stair, and kneel. Your heel should lift only a little. Lots of slip = blisters by lunch.

Break-in isn't a fix

Leather softens, but a boot that hurts in the store usually won't become the right shape. Return it and try another last.

Read the safety tag

Your site or employer decides what you need. Here's what the codes on the tag mean.

ASTM F2413The US standard for protective-toe footwear. The tag inside the boot spells out what it's rated for.
I/75 · C/75Impact and compression protection for the toe cap (the highest class in the standard).
EHElectrical hazard rated — a secondary protection against accidental contact with live circuits. Not a substitute for proper electrical safety.
PRPuncture-resistant plate in the sole — think nails on a framing site.
MtMetatarsal protection over the top of the foot.

Steel, alloy and composite toes can all meet the same ASTM rating. Composite is non-metallic (no metal detector beeps, no cold transfer); alloy and steel caps are usually thinner, so the boot can be less bulky.

Fit is personal, so these are starting points, not a ranking. Check each listing for safety toe type, ASTM markings, waterproofing and insulation for your job.

Work boot · women's last

Timberland PRO women's work boots

Timberland PRO says its women's Direct Attach 6" steel-toe boot is built on a women's-specific last — the foot-shaped form the boot is made around — rather than a scaled-down men's boot.

KEEN Utility women's work boots

Workwear cut for women

Pants, hi-vis and the layers that make a long day easier

Look for a gusseted crotch and articulated knees (so you can squat and kneel), a rise that stays put when you bend, and pockets you can actually reach with a tool belt on.

Work pants

Carhartt Women's Rugged Flex work pants

Stretch canvas work pants cut for women, with utility pockets. Try more than one fit — Carhartt sells several.

Work pants

Ariat Women's Rebar work pants

Ariat's Rebar line includes women's canvas work pants with stretch and utility pockets.

Work pants

Dovetail Workwear women's pants

Dovetail designs workwear specifically for women — its pants come in multiple fits and pocket layouts, including utility cargo styles.

Hi-vis

Women's-cut high-visibility safety vest

If your site requires ANSI/ISEA 107 hi-vis, a women's cut stops the vest hanging to your knees. Match the class your site specifies.

Socks

Merino wool work socks

Cushioned, moisture-wicking socks change how a boot fits — try boots on with the socks you'll actually wear.

Insoles

Supportive work insoles

Long days on concrete? A supportive insole can help — remove the stock insole first so the boot doesn't get tight.

Gloves, glasses, earmuffs and dust masks that fit smaller heads and hands are in our starter kit safety gear.

Gear on?

Now go build something.

Boots laced, pants that move with you. Next up: the tools, and a first project you can finish this weekend.
